Vanderbilt celebrates the graduating class of 2019

Here we go! it’s amazing to think that I
was just here four years ago and I’ve done so many things. And met so many amazing people. I’m humbled. I think my favorite thing about
Vanderbilt is definitely just the student camaraderie. There’s a lot of
teamwork and everybody is cheering for each other. I’ve been friends with Telyse since my
sophomore year. We’ve gone through like the best parts of Vanderbilt and the
hardest parts of Vanderbilt together. So the fact that we’re standing here today
is like – it’s huge. Being like strong women who just value
other strong women and lift them up. Is I think what makes our bond so special. And when you were young, I said be the
bumblebee. You know the bumblebee because of the
way it’s shaped is not supposed to fly. It’s a small wing so but it’s doing the
impossible so she’s doing the impossible for her. This is the 12th time I’ve had the honor addressing a Vanderbilt graduating class as Chancellor. As it happens it’s also the last. Most of you
have had a team of supporters-parents, teachers, grandparents, aunts, uncles,
siblings, mentors, professors, others. They’ve been there for you like a NASCAR
pit crew loving you encouraging you helping you to get to this day. Your
focus rightly so has been about “me.” Starting today you’ll see a pivot to “we.”
You’ll begin using all that love, help and education you’ve given to support
nourish and care for other people. It has been a true profound honor
to live and learn with you on this campus as your Chancellor. I along with
the rest of your Vanderbilt family am very proud of you. Know that even as you
transition from “me” to “we,” we Vanderbilt stand by you. What in the world do you think about all of this? There’s no words. It’s horrible. Just challenge yourself, do yourself proud, and uphold the Vanderbilt tradition Cara, my baby girl. Just mature, just full
of life, very stubborn at times but she’s a
leader. I’m just proud I can’t say anything else just just proud. It’s gonna make me cry. I can’t wait to start my life as a
Vanderbilt graduate
