Jagdip Singh is the president of Patiala Association of the Deaf (PAD) in Punjab. This is his sign name. You all know that recently it was the International Day of Sign Languages and International Week of the Deaf. It started from 23rd September to 29th September. Each day of the week was celebrated differently of the PAD. Let me tell you about it. On 23rd Sep, PAD went to a Deaf school in Chandigarh. They met with the students and communicated in Sign Language. Students enjoyed the Sign language Day a lot. PAD distributed sweets to the students.. The students were very happy and enjoyed. On 24th September, PAD organised a drawing competition. Many Deaf schools participated in the competition. Competitions for Junior Kg and Senior Kg were separately held. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize were given to both of groups. The students were very excited and enjoyed the competition. On 25th September, PAD President Jagdip Singh – this is his sign name – went to a hearing college named Khalsa . There he gave a lecture about Deaf Culture and the compulsion of Sign language. His lecture gave Hearing students a better understanding about Deaf culture. The students were very excited and interested to learn about Sign language. On 26th September a district level conference was held about the RPWD law and accessibility, many officials were invited. It helped hearing audience understand. PAD’s aim is to open the government’s eyes to the suffering of the Deaf community due to lack of accessibility. We must continue advocating, till they give accessibility. The Deaf community must spread awareness among the Hearing community so that they understand Sign Language and Deaf culture. On 28th September, PAD organised a programme in chandigarh. Deaf people gathered from all over Punjab and Chandigarh. The programme was held to celebrate World Deaf Day. They invited a government disability officer as the chief guest. He was quite surprised such a large gathering of Deaf people. More than 600 deaf people attended the program. The government officer was very stunned and happy. Prizes were given to 6 Deaf individuals for their hard work and excellence. People who are excellent dancers were given prizes as well. Everyone enjoyed the programme.
