Join us in celebrating 70 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at USC

Hi, my name is Sofia Gruskin
and I’m the director of the Institute for Global Health at the University of
Southern California. December 10th, 1948, was a monumental day in history. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, providing a common standard of achievement for all
peoples and all nations. A document that Eleanor Roosevelt and other authors, the United States helped to shape in the aftermath, the suffering and the
horrors of the Second World War. This affirmation that born, we all are, free and equal in dignity and in rights. Seventy years later the dignity of millions has been uplifted, untold human rights suffering prevented and the foundations
for a just world have truly been laid. I’m pleased to announce that with the
University of Southern California, Los Angeles will host a global celebration
to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. From Pretoria to Paris and from London to Los Angeles, in cities world over, we’re asking people everywhere to stand up, to shine their light for human rights. The USC Institute for Global Health, the United Nations Office of the High
Commissioner for Human Rights, the United Nations Foundation and Los Angeles Mayor
Eric Garcetti’s office invite you to join us for a conversation with global
leaders on December 10th here at the University of Southern California. I challenge you to learn more, and to do more, to protect your human rights and
the rights of others. I will respect your rights, regardless of who you are. I will uphold your rights even when I disagree with you even when I disagree with you. when anyone’s human rights are denied everyone’s right are undermined. So I will stand up. I will raise my voice. I will take action. I will take action. I will take action. I will use my rights to stand up for your rights.
