AND THE WINNER OF THE $200,000 ARTPRIZE NINE JURIED VOTE GRAND PRIZE IS — JONES. I THINK FOR US IT REALLY REPRESENTS THE SPIRIT OF ARTPRIZE. HE IS AN ARTIST INTERESTED IN SOCIAL PRACTICE. HE DOES NOT MAKE OBJECTS. IT OPENS UP A LARGER CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT ART CAN BE WHICH I THINK IS A VERY WONDERFUL WAY OF ENGAGING THOSE OUTSIDE OF AN ART BUBBLE. FOR THAT REASON, I THINK IT IS A REALLY POWERFUL WORK. IT IS AN ENGAGED EXPERIENCE. YOU CAN TALK ABOUT SOCIAL ISSUES, EQUITY, DIVERSITY, SOCIAL JUSTICE. I THINK IT ENGAGES VIEWERS FROM THE WHOLE STRATA OF ECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS. WHEN I MADE NOTICE OF THE FACT THAT I WAS NOT PRESENT FOR THE ACTUAL MEAL BUT I STILL TOOK AWAY THAT FEELING OF COMMUNITY AND TOGETHERNESS, THAT REALLY SPOKE TO ME IN TERMS OF SOMETHING BEING VERY SPECIAL. A MOMENT OF ENGAGEMENT WE WOULD SAY WE WANT TO HAPPEN. WHAT REALLY TOUCHED ME WAS THE FACT THAT I THINK HIS WORK REPRESENTED WHAT ART IS ABOUT. IT IS NOT ONLY ABOUT THE ABILITY TO DRAW WELL. IT IS ABOUT WHAT ONE SAYS THROUGH A PRACTICE. THROUGH HIS WORK, HE SPEAKS ABOUT SOME OF THE KEY POINTS IN AMERICA NOW INCLUDING ACCESS TO FOOD, COMMUNITY. PEOPLE CREATING A SPACE OF CONVERSATION. IT IS A WORK SPEAKING TO A SPECIFIC CONTEXT THAT EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND. WHETHER THEY LIKE ART OR NOT. THEY UNDERSTAND THOSE BASIC HUMAN QUESTIONS. IN 2017, I FELT THAT WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW IN THE UNITED STATES, HE HAS TOUCHED SO MANY PEOPLE BY BEING THE ARTISAN OF THIS PROJECT. [APPLAUSE] WELL, FIRST OF ALL, I AM GOING TO TAKE A LITTLE LONGER THAN 15 SECONDS. I AM HONORED AND FLATTERED AND REALLY OVERWHELMED. I HAVE TO GIVE A BIG SHOUT OUT OF BANKS TO MY WIFE WHO IS WATCHING THIS AT HOME, STREAMING LIVE. FOR HER PATIENCE AND HER LOVE. AND THEN, ANOTHER SHOUT OUT TO THIS GAME I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH HERE. AND THEN, A BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE LADY OF LOGISTICS WHO HELPED ME THROUGH ALL OF THIS, HOLDING MY HAND THROUGH THIS, CATHERINE WILLIAMS, ANOTHER STAFFER. THIS MEAL WAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO HAVE AN OVER THE TABLE CONVERSATION RIGHT HERE IN GRAND RAPIDS ABOUT ISSUES OF FOOD JUSTICE, ABOUT ISSUES OF FOOD ACCESS.
