2018 USU Graduate Hooding Ceremony

2018 USU Graduate Hooding Ceremony

>>Ladies and gentlemen, the audience, please stand as our Army ROTC Color Guard presents the colors. After which, Benjamin Kuch, a graduating senior in vocal performance, will sing the national anthem.>>Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light. What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, over the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave over the land of the free and the home of the brave?>>Thank you. You may be seated. Once again, welcome to this year’s graduate commencement and hooding ceremony. My name is Mark McClellan. I am the Vice President of Research and Dean of School of Graduate Studies. It is both my privilege and honor to welcome everyone to this graduate ceremony where we recognize and celebrate the academic accomplishments of the masters and doctoral candidates that are assembled here today. Graduates, today, we honor and congratulate you for an extraordinary achievement. I’d like to thank the USU Scotsmen Pipe and Drum Corp and the USU band, brass, and percussion ensemble conducted by Dr. Thomas Rohrer for providing our music today. A special thanks to you, Benjamin. That was extraordinary. Benjamin Krutsch, who sang the national anthem. Our mace-bearer is Dr. Kimberly Lott, President of the Faculty Senate, and our college marshalls today representing our USU Faculty Researchers of the Year for 2018 are holding our banners. On the platform seated with me are several special guests, who join us today to share this important occasion. We are joined by members of the Board of Regents, Teresa Theurer and Ron Jibson, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Jody Burnett, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, Mark Holland, and other members of our Board of Trustees, Kent Alder, John Ferry, Jaren Hunsaker, Scott Nixon, Clark Whitworth, President of Utah State University, Dr. Noelle Cockett, and interim provost, Dr. Laurens H. Smith. Ladies and gentlemen, our platform. Also on the stage is our Vice President for Business and Finance, Dave Cowley, our Vice President for Student Services, Dr. James Morales, and our Vice President for Cooperative Extension, Dr. Kenneth White. Also present are our Deans of Utah State University’s Academic Colleges who each be introduced as they participate in the hooding ceremony. Seated behind the platform are the people who had an indispensable role in the programs of each and every graduate student here today by serving as their educators, their mentors, and their friends. The people who are the very foundation of this great institution. Ladies and gentleman, the faculty of Utah State University. Announcing the names of our candidates are Dr. Ann Austin from the Department of Family Consumer and Human Development, Dr. Karin DeJonge-Kannan from the Department of Languages Philosophy and Communication Studies, Dr. James Davis from the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business, Dr. Keith Grant Davie from the Department of English, Dr. Richard Inouye and Dr. Scott Bates, Associate Vice Presidents for Research, and Associates Dean of the School of Graduate Studies will be helping in distribution of certificates. Of course, this graduate ceremony would not be possible without the hard work incredible staff of the School of Graduate Studies, planning and coordinating this ceremony is the responsibility of Ms. Joan Rudd, and it’s my privilege to work with these extraordinary group of professionals. So, present today in this auditorium are the family, loved ones, friends, and guests from all over the United States and indeed the world, who have come here to commemorate this important occasion. So, on behalf of the graduates here today, may I express a most heartfelt thanks to all of those who provided immeasurable support and encouragement to today’s graduates. Would all the family, loved ones, friends, and guests now please stand and be recognized for the recognition you deserve in the roles you’ve played in the success of our graduates. Please stand. Thank you. The hooding of graduate degree recipients dates back to the 12th and 13th century, after the earliest universities were formed. The dress of a scholar was the long gown of a cleric and you still see that influence today in today’s graduation robes. The hoods and later skull caps were used to cover the clerics shaved heads. Thankfully, the president doesn’t require these heads to be shaved so we’re fortunate. Over time, the hood has evolved from a head covering to a small cape and now is a completely separate garment that its color is representative of the discipline of the awarded degree. As in medieval times, our continuation of this time-honored practice is a public affirmation of the student’s intellectual growth, creativity and accomplishment beyond the baccalaureate degree. Although not all are attending the ceremony, 1,045 Utah State graduate students completed their programs this year. The ceremonial hooding of our masters and education specialists candidates, will be assisted by members of our USU Graduate Council of representatives. I’d like to recognize these individuals. They are Michelle Baker, Troy Baker, Abby Benningoff, Johan Du Toit, Conrad Lee, Victor Lee, Kathy Pozey and Todd Welch. Other faculty assisting the hooding are Martha, E. Helen Berry, Bradford Cole, and Thomas Frank. The hooding of our masters candidates will be taking place near the entrance to the platform to my left and right. We ask that you don’t take photos from the floor, only members of the press who had been previously credential they’re allowed on the floor. But we do invite one or two family members to use the seats reserved for that purpose in sections N and X here on either side of the podium. Please be cautious as you enter those areas. Once you’ve taken your photo, please return to your seat so others can join and take part in that photography. You’re welcome, of course, to come to the podium after this ceremony for your close up photos. Now, with the Graduate Council members and the readers please assemble on the floor at their designated locations. We will begin with the Caine College of the Arts. When one colleges is through with the hooding, there’ll be a short pause and then the next college will be hooded will be announced. The name of each candidate will be announced and the candidate would then move on to the platform to be congratulated by their dean, a representative of the graduate school, and by our president and our provost as the candidates walked to the center of the platform and then down the steps. As you can see, we have a very large number of graduates today, so please hold your collective applause until all the graduates have been hooded. President Cockett, Provost Smith would you please join us in front of the podium, with Richard Wayne and Scott Bates would you please come forward. With Dean Craig Jessop of the Caine College of the Arts please proceed to the center steps. Corey Christiansen, will you please post your college banner. Candidates for doctoral degree, please now rise, stand. President Cockett, these candidates hold the appropriate prerequisite degrees and have completed the required expectations in preparation for this degree. The faculty of the University have approved them for graduation as Dean of School of Graduate Studies. I hereby recommend that they be awarded the appropriate degree in their respective fields of accomplishment.>>By virtue of the authority vested in me by the state of Utah and the State Board of Regions, I confer upon you the doctoral degree appropriate to the requirements you have met. Congratulations.>>Doctoral degrees, please be seated. Thank you President Cockett. And now ladies and gentlemen, I ask all of you in the audience to please stand and join me in recognizing these graduate degrees the newest alumni of Utah State University. Thank you. If you’ll now be seated for closing remarks. Graduates, congratulations. It is indeed an exciting day, and as your graduate dean, I wish to leave you with a final word before you move on from USU. I was at a recent speaking event where I introduced myself and casually mentioned that I was a bread baker. And after my speech, the floor was open for questions. The first question asked was not about feeding a world of nine billion people, it was not about the local FDA stance on opioid issues. The first question of all questions was Dr. McLellan, how old is your starter culture? Now, I was thinking well of all the crazy questions, of all the possible questions, this was the first. It was about a passion of mine, bread baking, not my science, not my discipline, not my policy work. The lady was asking first connecting with me as a person, in her case, a fellow baker. Now, I raise this with you as you leave USU, it’s good to remember that for all the wonderful things and exciting work that you will be leading, it is sometimes your bread baking. It is your personal passion. It is your character that people will want to connect with first. It can be more important to let people see who you are as a human being and what your personal beliefs are and your principles are before you get to the work at hand. These are tough times out there. You are entering work environments that are challenging. It’s a time of cynicism in our society. It’s a time of doubt about our character and a wondering about our momentum. So it’s a time for you to be a beacon, to be an inspiration. It’s important for all of us here that you, the graduates here, are each a person of honor, a person who has first somewhat of character, someone with honesty and integrity. These my friends are not just words. Don’t you dare leave this place thinking this is only fluff. This is really about truly who you are and who you are going to be. Just as each of us are tested every day in our faith, you equally will be tested every day in your true character as a woman, as a man that you intend to be. It is your crawl as to what you will be known for, so own your reputation. I asked you now, will you be known for civility? Will you be known as a person of honor, with a person of integrity? Starting today, you get to choose that. You get to choose that for yourself. You need to own it. Now, don’t get me wrong. You can’t walk on water. Last time I checked, there was only one individual who could do that. Life’s decisions are not perfect and you will make mistakes, but you can stand on your principles. You can be remembered for your integrity. You can stand by your ethics and you can make decisions that are righteous. And in case you are wondering, my sour dough started states back to the 1700. So, share a part of who you are, share your humanity and stand on your principles of civility, honesty and integrity. For at the end of the day, it is all you might own, but it might well be worth far more than any bank account, any property, or any achievement, for it will be who you are. Graduates, on this May 4th, may the force be with you. Ladies and gentlemen, this concludes the 2018 graduate commencement hooding ceremony of Utah State University. We thank you all for being here. Drive safe. Thank you all. Bye bye.
