>>Now, this is a special day for our graduates. You have earned the right to be part of
the Pitt Community College tradition and I am proud to welcome you,
in a few minutes, as PCC alumni. But of course,
you didn’t do this on your own. Now, I ask that all parents,
grandparents, spouses, and everyone who contributed to the success
of our graduates to please stand, and receive a hearty round
of applause from us all.>>[APPLAUSE]>>[APPLAUSE] These students success is largely due to you and our successes at Pitt Community College is
really based on their success, so thank you for your support. You, graduates,
represent the largest group of students participating in a commencement ceremony
in Pitt Community College’s history.>>[APPLAUSE]>>Pitt Community College established degree and
diplomas completion as a major strategic goal a few years ago, and you have
definitely followed through with results, which will benefit yourselves and
our region for decades to come.>>That you represent 1,400 students who have completed their degrees and
diplomas this year. This group is just shy of 700. So, really, it’s quite an accomplishment. Thank you.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>In 1985, the Pitt Community College Board
of Trustees established the Distinguished Service Award,
which is presented to a person or persons who have demonstrated
outstanding contributions to enhance the mission and
services of the college. The 2017 Distinguished Service Awards
go to three very special people who have served as
Pitt Community College trustees. Please join me in welcoming Board of
Trustee member, Dr. Patty Sanders Smith, to introduce our first
recipient who is Dr. Virginia Hardy, if you would
come to the stage to be honored.>>Dr Virginia Hardy served as
a trustee at Pitt Community College from August 28th,
2008 until June 30th, 2016. She served on numerous committees,
such as Building and Grounds, Policies and Programs, Finance and Audit, Personnel
Committee, and the Executive Committee. Doctor Hardy chaired
the Personnel Committee from 2013 to 2015. Currently, she serves
East Carolina University as Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs. Prior to assuming her current role, Dr.
Hardy served as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at
the Brody School of Medicine. While in that capacity, she also served
as Interim Chief Diversity Officer. Before joining ECU,
Dr Hardy was a teacher and assistant principal at Welcome middle
school in Greenville, North Carolina. Dr. Hardy’s strong background
at East Carolina University in student affairs at employees leadership
has helped him inform decisions on these topics with members of the board of
trustees and college administrative staff.>>Doctor Hardy, we have this plaque to
present to you for your dedicated service to the Pitt Community College Board
of Trustees May 10, 2017.>>[APPLAUSE]>>Thank you, Dr. Sanders Smith. Now, we have the Chair of the Board, Mr. Charles Long, to present our second
Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Jimmy Nelson,
would you come forward to be honored.>>Jimmy grew up in Bethel and attended
Pitt County School, enrolling in several classes as he attended North PITT,
here in PITT Community College. After graduation from
North Pitt High school, he headed into the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill and had received the Moore Hill
scholarship upon his entry at UNC. Jimmy majored in chemistry and
graduated in 1977. At USA Chapel Hill he participated
in the student government. And he was a member of
the Colorado track team. He was named to the lAl
Atlantic Coast Conference Academic honor role as he participated
on that athletic activity. After graduation from Carolina, Jimmy
attended Campbell University School of Law and received his degree
to practice law in 1980. He joined the law firm of Mark W Owens Jr.
and was named a partner in 1983. And Jimmy still continues to
practice law at that location. He is a member of the North Carolina and
American Bar Associations. And has served on the boards of
Pitt County Health Education Foundation, the ELTSA project and the North Carolina Governor’s Council
on Physical Fitness and Health. He has active in St.
Peters Catholic Church. And served the Tech Community
College Board of Trustees from December 2004 until June 2016. During his terms on our board, Mr.
Nelson served on the policy and program, the building and grounds, the finance and
audit and the executive committees. He actually was chairperson
of the Building and Grounds Committee while we
were planning what will become the campus’ largest building,
that being the new Sox Building. Jimmy is the son of Francis Nelson and
the late Jimmy Nelson, Sr. He and his wife, Beth, have three adult children,
Jay, Suzanne, and McKenna. I learned a little story
about Jimmy [INAUDIBLE]. When Jimmy was born [INAUDIBLE] Nelson, Jr., he was so
impressive to their parents that they named all the rest of
the children with the letter J. Congratulations Jimmy. [LAUGH]
>>[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]>>Thank you, Mr. Long.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>And now for our final Distinguished Service Award,
I’ve asked Trustee Don Mills to come forward and along with the recipient,
Trustee Walter Williams. Mr. Walter Williams was appointed to
the Pitt County Community College Board of Trustees in August 2005, and
currently serves on the board today. Mr. Williams has serve a humorous Pitt
Community College Committees including the buildings in ground, personnel and
finance and audit committees. Mr. Williams is a founder
of Trade Company and also an alumnus of
EAst Carolina University. In 2007, he was presented with the Bill
Franklin Volunteer of the Year Award. Which recognizes the roles individuals
play in the life of an institution, particularly as it
relates to fund raising. In 2008, Mr.
Williams served as co-chair of the Futures First Campaign Committee for
the Pitt Community College Foundation. Consisting of community leaders and PCC staff that raised revenue
used to purchase new technology. Create endowments for student
scholarships and to fund training and professional development for
college employees. Mr. Williams has frequently served
as legislative liaison with elected officials of the North Carolina
Jones Assembly with the board of trustees. His council has been
an invaluable in advocating for community college budget priorities. And on personal note were the best
center school teacher, I’ve every had. And it is most appropriate that
presentation of Pitt Community College distinguished service award is
presented to Mr. Walter Williams right here tonight at Pitt Community College’s
Commencement Exercises in Williams Arena.>>[APPLAUSE]>>Thank you, Mr. Mills. At this time to introduce
our graduation speaker, I welcome Vice President of Institutional
Advancement, Susan Nobles to the podium. By the way, this spring Vice President
Nobles was named Staff Member of the Year in the entire State of
North Carolina Community College System.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>Susan, it is my honor to introduce
our speaker for today’s event. Susan?>>It is my honor to introduce our speaker
for today’s Commencement Exercise for Pitt Community College, Ms. Hannah Moore. Hannah is the daughter of Lynn and
Andy Moore of Wilson, North Carolina. And we’re so pleased they’re on
the front row tonight, Andy, Lynn. In 2015, Hannah graduated
from Beddingfield High School as a valedictorian of her class, and
she was a speaker at that graduation also. In her time at Pitt Community College,
she has shown dedication to the college. She’s shown commitment to the classroom
and service to the community. Hannah is an associate and arts graduate, who has strived for academic excellence through maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA.>>[APPLAUSE]
>>Hannah took advanced classes to prepare for her goal of entering dental school
at East Carolina University one day. Currently she plans to transfer
to East Carolina University into the Health Services
Management Program to take the first steps on the path
of her goal to become a dentist. In fact,
she’s working on that this summer. She plans to shadow with Dr. Shannon
Holcomb, a dentist here in Greenville. Beyond the classroom, Hannah has
given much to the college she loves. She was a student ambassador for
the college for two years, often serving for the PCC Foundation Board
of Trustees and campus events. And she often also provided chores for
new students. In addition, Hanna was a member of
the PCC women’s volleyball team for two years, serving as a defensive
specialist for the team. It is indeed my honor to
present to you Hanna Moore as your 2017 Commencement Speaker.>>[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]>>Thank you Ms. Good evening faculty, staff, friends,
family and most importantly, the class of 2017. Today is a big day. All of these sitting in front of me, are only moments away from
having a degree in your hands. And that is a huge accomplishment. Getting to this point was not
an easy task, but you’re here. You’re proving, that you do not give up,
when a hard task is in front of you. Since you all are graduating,
I know that you are aware, that each story has a beginning,
a middle, and an end. Or, each journey, has a start,
a long ride, and a destination. And each part of your journey helps
you reach that in destination. Your starting point was the day you said,
I’m going to college. Making that decision altered
your life in some way. Choosing to go to college
is not an easy one to make. There are lot of things a person must
consider when making that decision. For me, I knew I should go to college
because I wanted to be educated so I can eventually find a good job. But when I started to apply to colleges,
there were so many things to take in. It was extremely overwhelming, like, I’m
sure it was for most of you all as well. Now, I came out of high school and
decided to come to PCC, because I’m certain you all know by
now this is a great starting point. And maybe not all of you
started the journey at PCC, but either way we all have
one thing in common. We made the decision to go to college. That’s a step a lot of people never make,
and you should be proud of yourselves for making that choice. So after you go through orientation and
you’ve registered for all your classes,
you have a long ride ahead of you. I know some of you came to
PCC as full time students, having at least 12 credit hours each
semester, taking rigorous courses, that would get you that
degree you’ve longed for. But for others I’m sure 12 credit
hours just wasn’t an option. And that’s okay too, because look
at where you’re sitting today. Sometimes it just feels like
there’s not enough time in the day, being a student ambassador, and
a student athlete, I know that feeling. As students,
I know we all are a bit too familiar, with the thought that people
underestimate the amount of stress, a college student is under and how hard
it really is being a college student. As a college student, I know you all had to work really
hard to get where you are today. I can relate to the fact that you spent
night after night doing homework, studying, and
just worrying about all your school work. I mean, just last year,
I spent six hours studying for my last chemistry test in 151, hoping that
I get a nice cushion before my final exam. Well, I made a 68 on that test and
I called my mom and cried for long time [LAUGH] But I didn’t give up, I
came back and I nailed the final, because even though I was extremely stressed,
I kept pushing until I nailed it. College is a big deal,
whether you all believe it or not. And I want you to know that I know
what you did to get to this point was not an easy task. It wasn’t just a walk in the park. And everyone who is here to support these
graduates today needs to know that too. These graduates aren’t sitting here in
this room because it was easy to get here. They’re sitting in this room
because even though it was hard, they were able to push through. They’re so many obstacles people can
face whether trying to earn that degree. And that’s what can make this ride feel so
long and difficult at times. A lot can happen on a long ride,
as I’m sure most of you know. You can try to prepare
yourself as best you can. But sometimes, you can’t plan for
everything that can go wrong. I have two words that kind of define
that long ride you take while you are studying to receive your degree. And those words are life happens, meaning things happen in your life
that you have no control over. Maybe on your long run, your GPS takes you
the longer route than you had expected. Or maybe on your long ride,
your car breaks down. And this things can be really
major setbacks, on your journey. A lot can happen, in a couple of years. That can cause a delay,
to arriving at your final destination. But once again, I want you to look
at where you are sitting right now. Being a student, I know that life happens
and it can really bring you down. I’ve had the opportunity to be at PCC for
the past two years. And in the past two years, a lot has
happened to me, both good and bad. And on Sundays, it can really feel
like that the bad outweighs the good. But I believe that all of those
things that have happened to me was God putting me in this position
today to be able to talk to you all. And I know a lot has happened to you since
you made the decision to come to college. But it still led you to
where you are today. During this long journey, not only did
you probably have setbacks and bad days. But, you’ve also learned a whole lot. And, I know you have to learn
something to be seating here today. And so, I’ve asked myself over the past
two years, what have I learned. And the first thing that comes to mind is,
well, I sure do know a whole lot
more about the human anatomy. Thanks to Mr But, being a college student, you learn a whole lot more than
what you learned in the classroom. You learned how to manage your time. You learned to be independent. You learned to be hard working. And without all of these lessons
you have learned on this long ride, you wouldn’t have made it
to the end of your journey. And all of these things you’ve learned
can be used on your next adventure. We all have had different starting points. We all have had different
routes we took to get here. We all have been throughout different
events over this long journey. But today,
we arrive at the same destination. It doesn’t matter where you started from,
or how long it took you to get here. It’s about the fact
that you’re here today. You made it. And I know that sounds extremely cliche,
but here you all see it anxiously
waiting to cross the stage. And I cannot emphasize enough how
big of an accomplishment this is. For those of you who made
this your final destination, congratulations you’re finished. And for those of you who have decided
to continue on, I hope their PCC has created a good foundation for
you to reach your final destination. I know a lot of you might
walk away today and not remember a thing I have said up here,
but if you’re gonna remember something, remember that it’s not about where
you start but where you finish. And today you finish as PCC graduates
Congratulations Class of 2017.>>[APPLAUSE]>>Members of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Massey, and
other distinguished guests and friends. It is with great pleasure that I recognize
the outstanding faculty who have guided our graduates in
their educational journey. Will the faculty please stand? Let’s give them a bid round of applause,
please.>>[APPLAUSE]>>There are also many staff who support our college,
will the staff member please stand? Let’s give them a big round of applause,
please.>>[APPLAUSE]
